1 in 3 women will be affected by Gender based violence in their lifetime. It appears in the form of physical or sexual assault by intimate partners or non partner violence. Over 200 million women have experienced female genital mutilation, an sadly, this practice still continues today. It is a global epidemic that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Studies have shown that children growing up with violence are more likely to become survivors themselves or perpetrators of violence in the future.
Goal
At Listeners without borders, we are dedicated to addressing this issue. Our goal is to educate women on gender based violence and teach them how they can protect themselves when in this situation. We provide them with emotional coaching skills and knowledge on how to go about facing violence inflicted upon them.
Our current focus is on Somali girls in Nairobi. We have identified them as a place to start our progam, being they are significantly affected by Sgbv especially in regards to female genital mutilation.
Action Plan
We organize seminars focused on community outreach. Our most recent event was based in Nairobi, Kenya and was attended by 156 people. We provided training on ways of preventing gender based violence. We received an outpouring of good feedback and have managed to shift the perspective of our target audience on gender based violence and equipped them with skills on how to protect themselves.
How can you help
Decresing violence against women and girls requires a community based approach. We are currently holding a fundraiser online to fund hosting another seminar on gender based violence. The funds will be used to provide internet access for the attendees so that they can benefit from the program. You can support our initiative by contributing funds and sharing our initiative with friends and family.
